#146 Minnesota -5 over Rutgers 11:00 AM CT
Athan Kaliakmanis beat his former team last season as Rutgers had a 4th quarter comeback for the program’s first ever win over Minnesota. The Rutgers offense is off to a great start this season, but the defense has struggled as the Knights fell short in last week’s Big Ten opener hosting Iowa on Friday. Minnesota has had two weeks to prepare for this game after losing at California, while a trip to Columbus is up next week to magnify the importance of getting to 1-0 in Big Ten play. Minnesota has a top 10 run defense nationally allowing just 2.2 yards per rush this season while Rutgers has allowed 5.3 yards per rush, for a huge gap in the results with Rutgers featuring one of the worst per carry averages of any major conference team so far this season. Minnesota only had 35 rushing yards in last season’s game in Piscataway for a season low result that won’t likely be repeated, as that looks like an outlier result on the 2024 Gophers season. The loss to California was a late night test and the first road game of the season for Minnesota and it was effectively a toss-up game despite the 13-point final score. Rutgers won a toss-up game in the season opener vs. Ohio while getting outgained by a MAC team as the Knights aren’t far from already having two losses. Rutgers has not played a road game yet this season as the 3-1 start has come exclusively at home while the Knights are 4-10 S/U in the team’s last 14 road games going back to 2022.
