Free Pick Wednesday: #920 San Diego Padres (Wacha) -110 over Seattle Mariners (Kirby) 3:10 PM CT

San Diego went 0-8 with runners in scoring position last night to lose 4-1 hosting Seattle. The Mariners made the most of fewer opportunities with a pair of big two-out hits and had two home runs in the late innings to win even with the Padres having just as many extra-base hits. Both starters pitched well, and the Seattle bullpen got the win even with a 6.21 ERA and 1.70 WHIP for relievers in the past 10 games compared to a 2.56 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP for the Padres bullpen. Neither offense has been overly effective in recent weeks, but the struggles have been worse for Seattle, batting .204 with 3.7 runs per nine in the past 10 games while San Diego has scored 4.5 runs per nine. Michael Wacha and George Kirby have rather similar numbers this season, getting there with modest strikeout counts but strong command. Wacha has quietly been one of MLB’s best pitchers in the past month with a 1.23 ERA in his past six starts. Kirby has been inconsistent of late with two scoreless outings but also three outings in which he has allowed three or more runs since the start of May. Both of his scoreless efforts were in Seattle and despite last night’s result, the Padres have a significant edge in the late innings in this matchup that should play out in the second game of this series following two starters with similar potential.
