Detroit won a tense Game 1 in Cleveland, surviving a 9th inning where the leadoff batter reached third base with no outs after a throwing error. The Tigers had two runs with only five hits, but Detroit also managed to only use one reliever as Tarik Skubal struck out 14 while nearly completing eight innings. Cleveland used three relievers and will call on Tanner Bibee for Game 2. Bibee had an average season line in 2025 but after struggling in August he put together a strong September including getting two wins vs. Detroit in his final two regular season starts. The Tigers counter with Casey Mize, the former #1 pick that has taken some time to find MLB success. 2025 was his most complete season and he had a strong closing run with a 3.49 ERA in September while having great numbers vs. Cleveland this season, including seven scoreless innings in a July start at Progressive Field. Cleveland entered the postseason with momentum from the great late season run to catch Detroit in the AL Central, but Detroit was 73 runs stronger than the Guardians in run differential this season. Cleveland had just a .679 team OPS vs. right-handers this season compared to .712 for Detroit. Mize has a better strikeout rate, walk rate, and home run rate compared with Bibee as Detroit may still get the last laugh in this AL Central battle despite the collapse to surrender the division title.
