Marquette owns an ugly 9-18 record this season but three of the team’s four Big East wins have come in the past eight games. Marquette has also played very close games with Villanova and St. John’s in February as right now the Golden Eagles are playing better than the record and season numbers show. Eight of 12 Big East losses for Marquette have come by single-digit margins including a home loss to Georgetown in mid-December. That game came following high-profile non-conference games with Wisconsin and Purdue however, and Marquette had a significant free throw deficit at home in that game. Georgetown is 5-11 in conference play and has a 2-6 S/U home record in the Big East. The Hoyas have dropped four straight games since beating Creighton at home on February 4. Georgetown is a risky favorite with a deliberate pace of play and very poor 2-point shooting results, with Marquette nearly six percent better inside the arc. Turnovers should favor Marquette in this pairing with stronger results on both sides of the ball in the Big East season. Marquette had won eight meetings in a row before the December loss, which came in close game in a problematic scheduling set-up. While both teams have disappointed with poor results this season, Marquette has shown a good effort vs. top Big East teams in recent games and has the potential to break out of the basement in the standings.
