Free Pick Friday: #966 Los Angeles Angels (Detmers) +110 over Minnesota Twins (Ryan) 8:38 PM CT

In this pairing of promising young starting pitchers, 26-year-old Joe Ryan has far better numbers than 23-year-old Reid Detmers. They have similar strikeout rates however as the difference in the numbers has been Ryan stranding over 80 percent of his base runners while owning a .252 BABIP. In contrast, Detmers has allowed almost 37 percent of his base runners to score and has been saddled with a .372 BABIP. Detmers has allowed three or fewer runs in five of his seven starts and it won’t be a surprise if these players wind up with similar numbers by the end of the season with corrections coming in opposite directions. Minnesota lost two of three against the Dodgers to start this west coast trip and the Twins are struggling at the plate, batting .231 this season while one of the most strikeout-prone teams in MLB. The Twins have only four wins this season vs. left-handed starters while batting .219 and scoring 3.3 runs per nine vs. southpaws. The Angels have hit .271 with 5.1 runs per nine in the past 10 games vs. right-handers and the Angels have delivered significantly stronger relief pitching numbers the past two weeks. The Angels don’t have an off day after an east coast trip for a tough turnaround but yesterday’s 6-5 win in Baltimore was a nice result to provide some momentum. The Twins may be a stretch as road favorites tonight with a depleted lineup that could see four potential starters out of the lineup with recent injuries.
