Free Pick Wednesday: #960 Baltimore Orioles (Bradish) -140 over Los Angeles Angels (Canning) 5:35 PM CT

The recent bullpen splits are enough to tilt the preference to the Orioles Wednesday evening after Los Angeles and Baltimore have split the past two games in this series in higher-scoring contests. Baltimore has a 1.72 bullpen ERA with a 1.09 WHIP in the past 10 games in contrast to the 6.29 bullpen ERA with a 1.51 WHIP for the Angels. Griffin Canning has some potential at the MLB level, but he hasn’t looked the part so far in 2023 with a career low 7.9 K/9 so far this season leading to a 6.38 ERA with a 5.10 FIP. He has allowed 10 runs in his last two starts as the numbers are headed in the wrong direction for the 2017 2nd rounder that still hasn’t had the MLB breakthrough season many have been expecting. Kyle Bradish was a 4th round pick in 2018 and his numbers have offered more promise in 2023 with a 4.36 FIP and an 8.4 K/9. Bradish has a big fastball and a four-pitch mix and concerns about his command have been calmed to some degree with only 10 walks allowed in six starts this season. The home splits are poor for Bradish this season, but one ugly start vs. Boston has inflated the figures. Ultimately the starting pairing is close enough to think this game will be decided in the bullpen where the Orioles have a clear edge, even if Baltimore’s recent offensive splits have been short of the team’s season numbers. The Angels are still above .500 but are only 15-19 when Shohei Ohtani isn’t starting on the mound and the incredible start for the Rays has obscured how impressive the Orioles have been in an 27-15 start to the season that includes a 14-7 record at Oriole Park.
