#917/918 UNDER 8 Houston Astros (Brown) at Detroit Tigers (Flaherty) 12:40 PM CT

Offense exploded Saturday in this pairing with 14 runs and 26 combined hits as Houston rallied to win after an 8-0 defeat on Friday. Six runs came with two outs, and three home runs were hit, including a third inning grand slam. Even with the outburst yesterday, both teams are averaging just 4.2 runs per nine vs. right-handed pitching in the past 10 games. Both bullpens have also posted dominant recent splits as well. Houston has a 2.33 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP in the past 10 games while Detroit has a 2.10 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP. The Astros are only 1.5 games behind Seattle for the AL West lead and Hunter Brown’s return has been a welcome sight. Brown was one of the better AL starters last seasons but he was on the IL for over two months after making two early season starts. He has been sharp in his two starts back and he owns a 1.40 ERA on the season with a 13.0 K/9. Jack Flaherty is 1-8 in decisions with a 5.35 ERA, but his FIP is more respectable at 4.10. A short IL trip and some minor league re-tooling should benefit the veteran right-hander who isn’t far removed from a great 2024 season. Conditions in Detroit Sunday should favor the pitching staffs with relatively cool summer temperatures and wind pushing in from left field. Expect Saturday’s outcome to be the outlier in this series as four of six meetings this season between these teams have featured eight or fewer runs, while Detroit in particular has been a great ‘under’ team on the season.
