#700 USC -5.5 over Wichita State 10:00 PM CT

USC has one of the nation’s top recruiting classes. The 7-foot Ratliff twins join an excellent returning group led by Rodney Rice, Alijah Arenas and Jacob Cofie. The Trojans’ size is overwhelming, and year three for Eric Musselman should bring a significant breakthrough. The freshmen made an immediate impact in the opener as Adonis Ratliff scored 25 in a 95-63 rout of Milwaukee, and USC shot 57 percent from the field and 12-of-22 from three. This is the first real test, in a neutral setting at the Lake Tahoe Classic in Nevada. Wichita State needed a strong closing run to get past Cal State Northridge in its opener. The Shockers have good returning experience, but they produced just one top-50 win last season and that was a 1-point overtime win over South Florida, which graded 47th. The AAC wasn’t strong last year, and while Wichita State should contend in the league again, this is a very tough matchup. The Shockers will be physically overmatched with a small lineup. They haven’t been a great outside shooting team either, and they shot below 30 percent from three in Game 1. Chattanooga transfer Jordan Frison is the new point guard, and he managed just six points on Wednesday. Wichita State also went 1-4 in non-conference games away from home last season, with the only win coming in overtime over Northern Iowa. USC is already a top-25 team despite a 7-13 Big Ten season and a long losing skid last February. This group has great potential and should have a clear edge here.
