#962 Seattle Mariners (Castillo) +105 over Boston Red Sox (Crochet) 3:10 PM CT
The Rafael Devers trade isn’t likely to sit well in the clubhouse and the Red Sox were flat in an 8-0 loss last night. Boston is above .500 and right in the AL wild card race despite the big move. The current 6-1 run is a bit of a mirage however as the offense has not topped four runs in any of those seven games. Garrett Crochet can deliver a strong outing for Boston on the mound, but Seattle is hitting .297 vs. left-handers in the past 10 games while Boston is batting .202 vs. right-handers in that span. Seattle has won four of the past five games and the offense appears to be back on the upswing in an erratic season for the Mariners. Luis Castillo is still pitching at a high level with a 3.29 ERA in over 79 innings this season despite only four wins and a lower strikeout rate than his past All-Star seasons. Castillo has a 2.35 ERA at home this season and his best months are June and July in his career with great midseason splits. The Seattle bullpen has a 0.67 WHIP with a 0.60 ERA in the past five games, and another strong starting effort last night keeps that unit in great shape. In contrast Boston needed nearly five innings from four relievers to get through last night’s 8-0 defeat to even this series. Boston is just 5-9 in road games since mid-May and 16-20 on the road for the season and the struggling offense won’t be helped by taking the biggest threat in the lineup away.
