Tampa Bay has taken itself out of the AL playoff race going 11-24 since July 1 despite having a respectable season record and picking up a win to start this series last night. The Rays have played 14 of the past 17 games on the road for a taxing scheduling run as the strong start to the season was built on a home-heavy early season schedule. Shane Baz has average numbers this season and has allowed three or more runs in 14 of his last 20 starts as a consistently mediocre starter for the Rays and the Athletics won in Tampa in his early July start in this matchup. Jacob Lopez has great numbers for the Athletics with a 10.9 K/9 and a 3.59 ERA this season including three consecutive scoreless outings and a 3.13 ERA in Sacramento. The Athletics have a 2.33 bullpen ERA with a 0.98 WHIP in the past 10 games and only needed six outs from their primary relievers last night despite a poor starting effort. In the past 10 games vs. right-handed pitching the Rays have posted 3.2 runs per nine compared to 5.3 runs per nine for the Athletics and last night’s outburst came vs. a left-handed starter.
