#967 Seattle Mariners (Kirby) +110 over New York Yankees (Cole) 6:05 PM CT

Going against Gerrit Cole at Yankee Stadium won’t be a popular decision, but he isn’t pitching as well as his reputation. Cole has a 3.50 FIP this season as he has overachieved with a 2.75 ERA and his K/9 is on pace to be his worst since his 2017 season with the Pirates. His BB/9 is the highest it has been since his 2018 season in Houston while he has been able to get away with a much lower home run rate than his career average so far this season. He has a slightly higher ERA at home this season and he has posted rather average numbers in his last eight starts with just two wins and a 4.20 ERA with a FIP of 4.97. George Kirby doesn’t have Cole’s long-term track record, but he has been very good in 38 MLB starts with a 3.33 ERA. His command is exceptional with only six walks allowed in over 80 innings this season, though New York is no longer one of the better walk-rate lineups in MLB like they have typically been in recent seasons. Kirby threw eight scoreless innings vs. the Yankees in May and while New York has better bullpen statistics for the season, it is a rather small gap between these teams in the late innings. Both teams were off on Monday, but New York had to play a double-header on Sunday with short starting efforts in both games and the lineup is limited for New York right now with a .199 team average and a .607 team OPS in the past two weeks. Seattle has a .743 team OPS in that span averaging more than 4.5 runs per game for solid returns. A comparison of blind resumes in this pairing would put a clear edge to Seattle but the Yankees are drawing a favorite price with Cole on the mound despite being just 5-10 since late May and still playing without their best player. The Yankees lost both of Cole’s starts vs. Seattle last August and that was when they had Aaron Judge and his historic MVP production in the lineup.
