Free Pick Wednesday: #585 Dallas Mavericks -5 over San Antonio Spurs 7:40 PM CT
The Spurs enter this game off a rare win on Tuesday, putting up 132 points in a home win over Orlando to climb to 18-50 overall this season with 12 wins in San Antonio. The Spurs shot nearly 57 percent last night including nearly 54 percent from 3-point range, difficult numbers to repeat for anyone, let alone a team at the bottom of the league with no rest day. Dallas has lacked a quality defensive profile in recent weeks but this remains an elite offense, though with some unknowns as the current core of the group hasn’t been together very long. Pressure is mounting for Dallas riding three straight defeats to slip into the #9 spot with the Lakers catching the Mavericks last night at 34-35. Dallas is only three games behind #4 Phoenix, but also only a game ahead of the #11 and #12 teams Utah and New Orleans. Dallas hit a low spot on Monday with only 88 wins in a second consecutive loss to Memphis but neither Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving played in that game. Doncic won’t be playing tonight while Irving is a question mark, as are Tim Hardaway and Christian Wood. The Spurs played without Keldon Johnson and Tre Jones last night as San Antonio may not be a complete group tonight either while playing on back-to-back nights. The spread records for both teams are among the worst in the NBA, but Dallas should be in a better rest and motivation situation to have a good opportunity to pull away, even with only 12 road wins this season. Dallas has won six in a row in this series S/U and three of the past four wins in that run have come by at least 10 points.
