Southern Miss is 1-0 in SBC play and with three wins overall, the Golden Eagles have a chance to break back into the postseason to erase a disastrous 1-11 campaign in 2024, going 0-8 in conference play last season. Charles Huff had success at Marshall and so far, the Golden Eagles have had a positive trajectory, but this is just the team’s second road game, losing by double-digits at Louisiana Tech in the team’s only other road test. Georgia Southern had to open its SBC path at SBC favorite James Madison two weeks ago and while the Eagles are just 2-3 this season, the three losses have been on the road against quality teams. Since joining the FBS ranks in 2014, few programs have been better ATS at home with Georgia Southern going 40-24-2 ATS including a 62 percent ATS record as a home underdog. Since 2023 Southern Miss is 1-12 S/U and 3-10 ATS in road games as the slight home underdog price for Georgia Southern is appealing in the first meeting for these programs since 1941. Clay Helton has put Georgia Southern in a bowl game all three seasons since taking over in 2022 and the Eagles were 6-2 S/U in Sun Belt games last season. The run defense numbers for the Eagles so far this season are rough, but Southern Miss has averaged just 3.9 yards per carry this season and the schedule has played a role in the poor defensive numbers.
