Trevor McDonald has pitched better than his 5.02 ERA and a 3-7 record suggest as his FIP is just 4.05. He has had two nightmare starts that weigh on the season numbers in a 13-start sample, but he has also delivered 10 outings with three or fewer earned runs allowed. McDonald has far better road numbers than home numbers this season for an oddity for a San Francisco pitcher as well. Kansas City allowed 19 runs yesterday for a demanding result on the pitching staff and the Royals have allowed at least five runs in eight of the team’s past nine games. The Royals have one of the worst bullpens in MLB this season and in the past 10 games Kansas City has a 6.58 ERA from relivers. Michael Wacha has decent numbers starting for Kansas City, but his FIP is above his solid 3.77 ERA and over his last eight starts Wacha is 1-5 with a 5.33 ERA despite still making the AL All-Star team. San Francisco’s relief pitching has been decent in recent weeks including a 3.30 ERA in the past 10 games with a 1.03 WHIP. The Giants have played .500 baseball since June 3 as well despite being a great disappointment for the season. In July San Francisco has scored at least three runs in 13 of 14 games for a 4.6 runs per game average. In the past five games the Royals are averaging just 3.1 runs per nine vs. right-handed pitching and the lineup is short-handed right now with Kyle Isbel and Maikel Garcia on the IL, while Bobby Witt sat on Sunday and could be a question mark Monday night with back tightness.
