#911 Cleveland Guardians (Cantillo) -105 over Chicago White Sox (Martin) 1:10 PM CT
The Guardians had 11 hits yesterday but managed only three runs as a 2-0 lead was erased with five runs allowed in a fateful sixth inning that was aided by back-to-back White Sox HBPs in this key AL Central clash. Cleveland went just 1-8 with runners in scoring position in the game. Cleveland’s offense has been on the upswing with the return of Jose Ramirez, but Cleveland is only 7-14 since the All-Star Break. The Guardians are scoring 5.3 runs per game in August however, and in the past five games Cleveland has averaged 5.7 runs per nine vs. right-handed pitching. Both teams have had bullpen issues of late as the starting pairing could be critical Sunday. Davis Martin’s fine season has imploded with a brutal five-start run featuring an 8.06 ERA. He has allowed 31 hits and 23 runs while Chicago is 1-4 in his last five starts. Joey Cantillo has been a steady performer for the Guardians with a 3.87 ERA in 24 starts and a solid 9.8 K/9. He is also left-handed and Chicago is batting .184 vs. left-handed pitching in the past 10 games. The Guardians have outhit Chicago each of the past two days and the White Sox used its top bullpen options on Saturday. Cleveland should be in a good position to take Sunday’s game in this key division series.
