The White Sox are one game behind Cleveland in the AL Central race but are sitting in good shape in the wild card picture, up three games on Texas for the final spot. Chicago has won four of the past five games with the offense posting 36 runs and left-hander Bryan Hudson has been a capable opener. Wednesday’s likely primary pitcher Erick Fedde has been a key part of the pitching staff down the stretch with a 3.03 ERA since late May and several recent strong starting and bulk innings efforts. Chicago has won seven of the past eight meetings in this series and the Royals have shown little fight the past two weeks with a 1-8 run in the past nine games. Kansas City pitching has allowed at least four runs in each of those eight losses and Seth Lugo has struggled with a 5.06 ERA this season. Lugo’s K/9 is the lowest since his rookie season in 2016 and his ERA is 7.35 since August 1, including struggling in his recent home starts. Chicago has scored 6.1 runs per nine in the past 10 games compared to 3.8 for the Royals while the Kansas City bullpen has a 6.39 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP in that span. Kansas City scored 11 runs yesterday but seven came while down 14-4 after seven innings as the White Sox experimented with bullpen options. Cleveland keeps winning but Chicago has a lot to play for and should take momentum into a favorable matchup Wednesday.
