Free Pick Saturday: #177 Rutgers +10 over Michigan State 11 AM CT

Credit Michigan State for an incredible performance last week, left for dead with major roster shortages due to suspensions, the Spartans upset Illinois as a significant underdog. The Spartans had great energy for that contest but unquestionably caught some breaks as the two touchdowns in the decisive third quarter came on drives of just 29 and 41 yards. Michigan State was outgained 441-294 as Illinois failed to cash in on numerous productive drives deep into Michigan State territory. At 4-5 Michigan State will be favored this week and next week as a bowl bid is possible even after a disastrous 1-4 start to the season but winning by margin is something Michigan State hasn’t done in Big Ten play, winning by six in overtime hosting Wisconsin and last week by eight.  In Big Ten play Michigan State is -76 in net scoring and that is without facing Penn State yet. Rutgers is also 4-5 this season and while the Scarlet Knights will be dogged in all three remaining games, this group has the potential to stay in this game as a significant underdog despite a total price barely over 40. Windy conditions are likely this weekend in East Lansing to negate a potential edge at quarterback for Michigan State and the production deficits in back-to-back losses for Rutgers are very similar to the production deficits Michigan State has endured the past two weeks despite getting a win. The ground game should be central to this result and Rutgers is better on a per carry basis by 0.6 net yards with edges on offense and defense in the running game. Rutgers is a full yard stronger per play on defense than Michigan State and the Scarlet Knights won S/U in the last trip to Spartan Stadium in 2020.
