#773/774 UNDER 139.5 UC Riverside at UC Irvine 9:00 PM CT

The most recent meeting between these teams went to 164 but that was an overtime game. Irvine is coming off a tremendous 32-win season, making the NIT Championship game last April. The Anteaters went 17-3 in Big West play but did split with Riverside. The home result was an 81-57 win last January and Irvine is a solid favorite to start 1-0 in conference play tonight. This year’s team hasn’t matched last season’s pace, however, with four losses already but it has been a relatively difficult schedule facing seven top 200 foes so far. The Anteaters are an up-tempo team, but the offense has posted brutal shooting results this season as Irvine games have had a lower-scoring trajectory this season including the ‘under’ winning in five of seven lined games. In the past two home dates Irvine has allowed just 52 and 57 points as this is currently a top 20 defense nationally, while fifth in the nation allowing an effective field goal rate of just above 42 percent. Irvine has terrific size by Big West standards and Riverside has struggled with turnovers on offense this season. The Highlanders are 4-3 overall but in road games Riverside is 2-3 and in the other top 150 road tests the Highlanders scored 57 and 68 points. This is a transition season for Gus Argenal with Mike Magpayo hired at Fordham and this season the offensive tempo for Riverside has been slower than the past few seasons. Look for points to come at a premium in this Big West opener.
