#303 Western Kentucky -7.5 over Jacksonville State 6:30 PM CT
Jacksonville State has been an intriguing team with a 5-2 start to the season in its first season at the FBS level. The schedule has been incredibly light however and in the two toughest games this season the Gamecocks lost by 14 at Coastal Carolina and last week by 18 hosting Liberty. The 15-point win at Middle Tennessee State was also a bizarre game, down 23-7 at halftime before a wild second half run, scoring 38 consecutive points but with only one scoring drive of more than 40 yards thanks to turnover breaks. Western Kentucky has been off since October 5 ahead of this game with a big opportunity in the spotlight before next week’s game with Liberty, which should decide the Conference USA leader. In the last game Western Kentucky won by just seven at Louisiana Tech but it was 35-7 at halftime as this team has more potential than the current scoring numbers suggest. Losing 63-10 at Ohio State wears on the overall numbers for the Hilltoppers and there are some big production disparities when you compare the common opponent game against Middle Tennessee State. Austin Reed has 14 touchdowns and only three interceptions this season, while importantly only getting sacked twice, as likely the top quarterback in the conference. The run defense strength for Jacksonville State won’t be as important in this pairing as Western Kentucky rushes only 36 percent of plays, fifth least in the nation. Western Kentucky is on an 8-3 ATS run as a road favorite since 2019 under Tyson Helton as well.
